St Alban’s pupils visited the theatre to see David Tennant as Richard II as part of the school's partnership with Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Pupils were also treated to a live streaming of his performance, followed by a Q&A session with David Tennant and Gregory Doran, in which they asked how much of David Tennant’s performance is down to the director and how much is left to his own interpretation.

Year 6 pupils from ARK Bentworth, King Solomon, ARK Oval and ARK Tindal have been visiting Wadham College to experience a taste of life at Oxford University.

On Friday 6 December, Bloomberg hosted a speed networking event for 50 ARK students, aiming to raise aspirations and expose students to a wide range of career opportunities.

Last night, ARK Schools and our Mathematics Mastery programme featured prominently in a story on BBC Newsnight. The show focussed on how policymakers can address the challenge of the UK’s results in the recent PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) survey, where UK students failed to make the top 20 in maths in a survey of 65 countries and education systems. The international league table was topped, once again, by Asian countries.

Lord Ian Livingston of Parkhead, the Minister of Trade and Investment and the former CEO of BT, delivered the fourth in our Reflections on Leadership lecture series at the University of London on 28 November.  Lord Livingston said that for him, leadership comes down to the very simple maxim: “Leaders make change happen.”

On 9 December we will be holding a recruitment event to find great English, maths and science teachers.
The event, held at our central offices in London, will feature a panel of senior teachers and leaders from across our network, including Jerry Collins, the Principal of the new ARK John Keats Academy.  They will discuss what principals look for in outstanding teachers, their experiences of teaching at an ARK School as well as what “outstanding” looks like in practice.

Over 70 pupils from six ARK schools took part in mock trials, case reviews and networked with practicing lawyers, barristers and legal executives at a Legal Professions Careers Information Day at the Law Society in London on 22 November. Pupils from Ark, ARK Putney, Burlington Danes, Evelyn Grace, Helenswood and Walworth academies were able to ask questions in workshops, over lunch and at panel sessions hosted by leading legal professionals.

ARK schools fielded their best Year 8 mathematicians at the annual ARK Maths Challenge in November, this year hosted by Ark Academy in Wembley.
Students competed in four challenging rounds of individual and team tasks aptly named swimming, boxing, marathon and relay in recognition of the different skillsets used in each.

For the past two years, ARK has been working with the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) to control diarrhoea, one of the leading causes of death in children. Piloting in Lusaka Province, our three-year programme aims to halve diarrhoeal deaths and reduce overall child mortality by 15% through a combination of prevention and treatment.
