ARK Schools today announced the appointment of Mark Phillips as principal designate of the proposed new William Parker Academy which ARK anticipates opening in Hastings in September. Mr Phillips is a respected school leader who is presently the principal of ARK Putney Academy in Wandsworth.

John McCarthy, journalist, writer and broadcaster, took to the stage before an audience of ARK Schools’ head teachers and senior leadership teams in the second of our Reflections on Leadership series. For over an hour, he held the audience’s full attention as he discussed the values and qualities that helped him to survive more than five years in captivity, following his kidnapping by Islamic Jihad in Lebanon in 1986.

On 27 March, Evelyn Grace Academy left the fourth annual ARK Schools Spelling Bee with the Champion’s Shield. They proved that their team were the best spellers by accumulating the most points across various spelling challenges throughout the day.
An Evelyn Grace student said: “To practice, my mum read words out (she pronounced them wrong) and I had to figure out what it was and spell it anyway!”

Jerry Collins, principal designate of ARK John Keats Academy in Enfield, discusses the challenges and opportunities he faces opening a new school in a short video interview. “It’s not very often one gets the opportunity to work in a school that is starting from scratch,” says Mr Collins, “one that has a vision for children that is going to transform their lives.”
ARK John Keats Academy will be a new all through academy for children from 4 - 18. Its primary school will open in Bell Lane, Enfield in September 2013.

ARK Putney Academy has been graded good in all four categories in its first Ofsted inspection - an exceptional achievement in just six months. Ofsted said that ARK Putney “is a well-led academy” whose students' progress by the end of year 11 exceeds the national average.

Last year ARK Schools launched Mathematics Mastery, a new approach to maths teaching and learning for primary and secondary schools. Drawing on good practice from ARK, the UK and abroad (in particular Singapore, which regularly leads international league tables), the programme seeks to address England’s under-achievement in maths by using a more focused approach to teaching.

On 1 March, seven young apprentices from Isaac Newton Academy Ilford took part in an airline-themed business challenge at top international consultancy firm Oliver Wyman. Students were tasked with choosing a new destination for a struggling airline; developing a marketing strategy and advertising campaign, and increasing profit margins by creating a new in-flight menu.

ARK Schools is pleased to announce the appointments of Helen Thurston as head teacher of ARK Rose Primary Academy in Birmingham and Amy Baird as primary head of school designate of ARK John Keats Academy in Enfield, which opens this September. Announcing the appointments ARK Schools’ Director of Education, Sophy Blakeway, said:  “We are delighted that Helen Thurston and Amy Baird have been appointed to lead ARK Rose and ARK John Keats Primaries. Both heads bring excellent track records to their new roles and are enthusiastic and highly skilled school leaders."

On 7 March at Chitungwiza Central Hospital in Zimbabwe, Health and Child Welfare Deputy Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora joined ARK's Chief Executive, Lucy Heller, to launch a programme to save the lives of  Zimbabwe's mothers and babies.
The Safe Arrivals programme, in which ARK has invested £1.5 million, aims to radically improve maternal and newborn survival rates by training frontline health workers and installing cost-effective, life-saving equipment in hospitals.
