Aoife O'Donnell is a reception teacher from Ark John Keats in Enfield. Last summer she spent two weeks in India as part of the Ark Global Teaching Fellowship Programme, sharing her expertise with our first primary school in India, Ark Lajpat Nagar.
I arrived in India with limited knowledge of the education system. I expected overcrowded classrooms with few resources and I was sceptical of the quality of education that could be provided in these circumstances. I was hopeful however that Ark Lajpat Nagar would present an alternative education for India’s poorest children.

I moved to Hastings just a few months ago to take up my first teaching job as a Reception teacher. I grew up in Chichester, so Hastings really appealed because it it’s on the coast and has an independent, artsy vibe.

In India, the 2014 national assessments determined that 47% of children in Grade 5 could not read a Grade 2 text. This was a national scandal. Many blamed India’s teachers.

‘I must have been crazy!’ Dr. Roma Chilengi says as he reflects on his decision in 2011 to return to Zambia and lead the newly launched Programme for the Awareness and Elimination of Diarrhoea (PAED). ‘I was giving up an interesting and rewarding position with Oxford University at the Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kenya as Head of Clinical Trials. But I decided to take up this new post because of a combination of the potential to have an impact and the opportunity to go back home to make a contribution.’

Since it was first published in 2010, Doug Lemov’s “Teach Like a Champion” has become one of the ‘must-read’ texts for teachers looking to improve their technique and realise their students’ full potential. Recently, Doug and his colleagues from Uncommon Schools, a network of high-performing schools in the United States, ran intensive workshops at Ark All Saints for teachers, including those in the Ark network. We caught up with Doug to ask for his top tips for new teachers.
