Frontline’s mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable children by recruiting and developing outstanding individuals to be leaders in social work. Frontline sets out to attract people who might not have considered a career in the profession before. This innovative two-year programme gives graduates and career changers excellent academic and on-the-job experience. In the longer term, Frontline wants to develop the next set of leaders in social work and broader society.

Transforming social work

When children have problems at home, it’s more difficult for them to succeed at school. In England, children who have been in care are twice as likely to not be in education, employment or training at age 19. That’s why we co-founded Frontline: a leadership programme that recruits the best and brightest graduates to become leaders in social work and broader society.

During this innovative two-year programme, graduates and career changers undertake an intensive five-week residential programme – the Summer Institute – before being allocated to a local authority where they are supervised by an experienced Consultant Social Worker. In their second year, they are a fully qualified social worker studying towards a Master’s while continuing the leadership development programme.

Frontline will help train the next generation of outstanding children’s social workers, and more vulnerable children will get the expert support they need to achieve at home and at school.

Frontline is already working with 18 local authorities and is expanding into a third region this year, the North East. The government has also backed the national roll out of the Frontline programme, meaning 1,000 new professionals will be available to support some of the most disadvantaged children and families by 2020.

Frontline climbed to 40 in The Times’ list of the Top 100 Graduate Employers for 2015-16 – up 36 places after entering at 76 in 2014. This clearly demonstrates that social work is an increasingly attractive choice for graduates.
