Students from several ARK schools were given the chance to bring their words to life recently as part of the network’s first-ever ARK Poetry Slam held at the world-famous Roundhouse performing arts venue in Camden, London.
The event was compered by musician, writer and poet Joshua Idehen who referred to the students as “rising stars” of the poetry world.  21 pupils took to the stage, and each performance was well-received by the packed audience.

Last week three ARK academies hosted a team from the Virgin Strive Challenge with pupils taking part in their own personal challenges.
This August, a core team of 10 people will take part in the Strive Challenge - aiming to reach the summit of the Matterhorn from London, entirely under their own steam. The Challenge aims to raise £750,000 to support young people in the UK develop the life skills they need to reach their potential.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron joined a host of other dignitaries for the first ever Girl Summit, an event dedicated to ending female genital mutilation (FGM) and child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) within a generation. The conference was held at ARK's Walworth Academy and was co-sponsored by the UK Government and UNICEF.

Young musicians from across the ARK Schools network joined together to sing and perform in a concert held at the prestigious Barbican Centre in London on 7 July. The ARK Schools Music Gala, now in its sixth year, is an annual event that brings together students from throughout the ARK Schools network in a celebration of music both contemporary and classical.

ARK’s Helenswood Academy has put together their own opera production, in coorperation with the Royal Opera House.

Yvonne Powell, Principal of Walworth Academy, was recently recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Ms Powell, former headteacher of Little Ilford School, was awarded an OBE for services to education. Ms Powell moved to Walworth Academy, part of the ARK Schools network, in 2012 after nine years at Little Ilford School in Newham where she led the school from Satisfactory to Outstanding.

A primary school’s pioneering work with maths teaching has won a special award at the annual TES School Awards.
ARK Atwood Primary Academy in Westminster has been working with the Mathematics Mastery programme to ensure that all pupils do well in maths, whatever their background. Based on research from the UK and abroad – in particular, from high-performing Singapore – Maths Mastery aims to help every child to enjoy maths.

ARK Schools has had its applications to create two brand new free schools in Croydon approved by the Department for Education.
The proposals will create a new primary academy with 660 places for local children, including a nursery with 30 places. In addition, a secondary academy will be built that will cater for 1,200 students, including a 300 place sixth form.

ARK Kings Academy students recently got to spend a day at Oxford University as guests of Wadham College. Students learnt about the benefits of higher education and came away from the day with greater confidence about their future choices. The visit formed part of ARK Kings Academy’s ongoing commitment to enrichment and high expectations for all.
