Monday 2nd December 2013

Over 70 pupils from six ARK schools took part in mock trials, case reviews and networked with practicing lawyers, barristers and legal executives at a Legal Professions Careers Information Day at the Law Society in London on 22 November. Pupils from Ark, ARK Putney, Burlington Danes, Evelyn Grace, Helenswood and Walworth academies were able to ask questions in workshops, over lunch and at panel sessions hosted by leading legal professionals.

ARK schools fielded their best Year 8 mathematicians at the annual ARK Maths Challenge in November, this year hosted by Ark Academy in Wembley.
Students competed in four challenging rounds of individual and team tasks aptly named swimming, boxing, marathon and relay in recognition of the different skillsets used in each.

For the past two years, ARK has been working with the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) to control diarrhoea, one of the leading causes of death in children. Piloting in Lusaka Province, our three-year programme aims to halve diarrhoeal deaths and reduce overall child mortality by 15% through a combination of prevention and treatment.

ARK Schools is delighted to announce that Isaac Newton Academy in Redbridge has appointed Tam Broadway as the founding head teacher of its new primary academy which opens alongside the existing Isaac Newton Academy in September 2014.

Monday 25th November 2013

Drive for Literacy, run jointly by ARK Schools and the Driver Youth Trust, supports pupils who need extra help with reading and writing. Working across several ARK schools, the programme helps teachers to identify children with dyslexia and give them the support they need.

Ark Ayrton Primary Academy recently played host to author/poet Brian Moses, with two local schools joining pupils in years 1­-­6 to take part in special workshops run as part of Portsmouth BookFest 2013.
Brian used percussion instruments, different voices and movement to bring his poetry alive, kindly donating a signed copy of his first novel to Ark Ayrton. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed listening to his readings and were even able to join in with his poems.

Students from ARK Putney Academy have been solving engineering problems as part of their work experience with our corporate partner Bouygues UK, with their solutions to be incorporated into the design of the new ARK John Keats building.
Year 13 students Josh, Tyrell and Emira spent their half-term holiday designing stairs and working on database analytics.

Last week, ARK and our partner PEAS hosted a delegation of senior Ministry of Education officials from Uganda and Zambia. The group came together for an ARK-hosted workshop on Public Private Partnerships (PPP) for education, where we discussed the rationale for the policy, its potential scope as well as important principles that policy makers should bear in mind when designing new education frameworks. Experts from ARK Schools ran specialist sessions on legal, financial, human resources and infrastructure issues to answer the group's technical questions.

As part of ARK’s University and Careers Success programme, Tolu was one of just six students to secure a summer school placement to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, United States. In his third and final blog about the experience, he waxes lyrical about the Harkness teaching method and remembers what he calls "the best summer" of his life. Tolu graduated from ARK Kings Academy in Birmingham August 2013 with seven GCSEs.
