Providing practical tools teachers can use every day
At Ark, teachers are encouraged to practise and embed evidence-informed methods and strategies such as mindfulness, resilience-building and emotional self-assessment. These approaches help teachers recognise how they are feeling and respond to challenges in a constructive way.
A key part of this work is identifying personal early warning signs of emotional overload. By recognising these signals early, teachers can take proactive steps to manage pressure and maintain a healthy balance.
These ideas are reinforced through regular communication, including weekly emails that share practical tips and tools to support wellbeing, ensuring teachers have simple reminders they can return to throughout the year.
Creating a culture where teachers feel supported
Wellbeing is strengthened through strong relationships and open communication. At Ark, teachers have regular one-to-one wellbeing catch-ups. These conversations provide a space to reflect on experiences, discuss challenges, and celebrate progress.
Anastasia Georgiou, who started at Ark as a graduate teaching assistant, explains: “I’ve always felt very well supported. Especially early in my career – I was quite young – having regular catch-ups and space to reflect made a big difference.”.
Just as importantly, we encourage teachers to speak up and seek support when they need it. Teaching works best when it is collaborative, and creating a culture where colleagues feel comfortable sharing their experiences helps reduce the sense of isolation that can sometimes come with the profession.
An environment that supports well-being
Ark has created systems that allow teachers to focus on teaching. Clear routines, effective behaviour policies and shared resources help reduce workload, while tools being tested as part of Ark’s wider digital transformation work aim to streamline tasks such as marking. Together, these approaches free up more time for teachers to support pupils and refine their practice.
At Ark Kings Academy, teachers feel this clarity immediately. Janine Sacks points to the amazing support that comes from “everybody singing the same tune”, while Will Mitchell shares “I was very well mentored from the moment I arrived and quickly embedded in Ark’s signature strategies”.
Teaching will always be a challenging profession, but with the right support structures and support in place, it can also be a deeply fulfilling one. By investing in teacher wellbeing from the start of their careers, Ark helps ensure that teachers are equipped not only to succeed in the classroom, but to thrive in the profession over the long term.
