A primary school’s pioneering work with maths teaching has won a special award at the annual TES School Awards.
ARK Atwood Primary Academy in Westminster has been working with the Mathematics Mastery programme to ensure that all pupils do well in maths, whatever their background. Based on research from the UK and abroad – in particular, from high-performing Singapore – Maths Mastery aims to help every child to enjoy maths.
Maths Mastery helps teachers to communicate maths skills and knowledge using everyday objects and images, and to develop a common language with their students when discussing the subject.
The results at ARK Atwood have been impressive. Within one year of implementing the programme, the school’s Year 1 pupils were achieving well beyond national expectations.
ARK Atwood Primary Academy’s victory was witnessed by over 600 people gathered to celebrate the sector’s achievements at the awards ceremony held at the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, on Friday 4 July.
Other awards at the prestigious event, hosted by comedian Hugh Dennis, included prizes for the Headteacher of the Year, Secondary School of the Year and Primary School of the Year.
Now in their sixth year, the TES Schools Awards aim to celebrate and reward the extraordinary innovation, dedication and hard work of those schools, individuals and teams who every day are making a real difference to the lives of future generations.
“This is simply an example of the brilliant application of a brilliant programme achieving brilliant results. Well done.” said the judges in their citation.
“It’s wonderful to receive this recognition of the work we have done,” said Daniel Upfield, Headteacher of ARK Atwood. “I want to thank our maths teachers and the Maths Mastery team for their hard work, you can really see how our pupils have developed their numeracy skills over the past year.”
