Ark Oval Primary Academy receives ‘good’ Ofsted rating in pre-lockdown inspection

Ark Oval Primary Academy continues to be a ‘good’ school according to the Ofsted latest report published this week.

The inspection took place at the school in Croydon on 4th and 5th March before the Coronavirus pandemic forced UK schools to close on 20th March.

The report stated leaders had high expectations for all pupils by placing reading at the heart of learning from Reception onwards.

The report added that: “Leaders are ambitious for all pupils in the school. They know what they want pupils to learn by the time they finish school. Pupils study a wide range of subjects. Leaders make sure these subjects are well-planned and teachers deliver the plans in a way that is interesting for pupils. Pupils’ work in their books is of a good quality and shows that pupils are learning what teachers intend…

The school’s leadership team was praised for having a very clear vision for learning in the school highlighting: “…Their work has already made an impact on improving the outcomes for children in the early years. Pupils do well in phonics because leaders prioritise the teaching of phonics from day one. Teachers focus on any pupils who are falling behind and make sure they catch up. Every teacher focuses on helping their pupils to become fluent readers…

Principal Toby Martlew said: “I am pleased with our latest Ofsted report. Our school takes pride in ensuring our pupils learn and develop as they progress through the years. We want all our pupils to succeed and not be limited by circumstance.

It’s wonderful that Ofsted recognised our approach to teaching by ensuring a broad, balanced and rigorous curriculum that’s linked closely with a school focus on character building, education and personal development.

During the current Coronavirus pandemic, I’m proud of staff for going above and beyond by maintaining high-quality teaching whether this is online or in our community classrooms. They are demonstrating resilience, cooperation, patience and a real team spirit.”
