The move comes as Ark and Pontefract Academies Trust (PAT) plan to merge in September 2026, creating new opportunities to expand access to excellent early education across the region.
Over the past few years, Ark Start has built a network of seven nurseries in London, working closely with families and local partners to deliver high‑quality provision. To date, 91% of children moving on from Ark Start settings have achieved a Good Level of Development in Reception, well above the national average of 67%.
Early discussions in Pontefract and Bradford
Ark Start has identified two sites at PAT schools in Pontefract and, following discussions with Wakefield Council, has submitted bids to the Department for Education’s School‑Based Nursery fund. In Bradford, Ark Start is also in discussion with Carlton Academy Trust (CAT) about opening at two schools, reflecting a shared commitment to ensuring all children in West Yorkshire can benefit from the best start in life.
Partnership‑first approach
Over the coming months, we will be working on our plans and hope to speak with local organisations, community groups, schools and others who are interested in shaping what this could look like. Strong partnerships have always been central to Ark Start’s approach, and we are keen to learn from those already working with young children and families in West Yorkshire.
Katie Oliver, Director of Ark Start said: “We’re excited by the potential to work with partners in West Yorkshire and to learn from what’s already working for children and families locally. Our focus is simple: high‑quality, flexible and affordable early education, delivered in close partnership with the community.”
Julian Appleyard, CEO of Pontefract Academies Trust said: “As we prepare for the Ark–PAT merger in 2026, this is a timely opportunity to align our strengths and expand access to great early years provision. We’re pleased to be exploring sites in Pontefract to bring greater support and educational opportunities for our families.”
Adrian Kneeshaw, CEO of Carlton Academies Trust said: “We are very excited about the potential to expand our early years provision at Thorpe and Carlton Mills Primary Schools in partnership with Ark Start. This proposal means our families and children will have the opportunity to benefit from an excellent early education and flexible childcare that meets families’ needs.”
Next steps and how to get involved
Ark Start aims to open up to four new nurseries in the 2026/27 academic year, subject to funding, approvals and site readiness. To lead this group of nurseries and our partnerships in the region we are looking to appoint a small locally based team.
