Pontefract Academies Trust and Ark Schools merger approved

In September, Ark Schools announced a proposed merger with Pontefract Academies Trust (PAT) on 1 September 2026. We are pleased to share that the Department for Education has now formally approved our merger proposal.

PAT is a well-respected, high-performing trust based in Pontefract, near Leeds, comprised of nine schools: seven primaries and two secondaries. Under the leadership of Julian Appleyard OBE, the trust has gone from being one of the lowest performing nationally to one of the top three multi academy trusts for primary school outcomes.

PAT’s central and executive team will become part of Ark’s wider central team, with PAT trustee representation on the Ark Schools Board to ensure continuity, stability, and integration between the two trusts.  Julian will become Ark’s Director of Growth and Regional Director (North) and will continue to lead the Pontefract region.

This is an exciting step for both trusts – and there is much to learn from each other through the merger process.  Work has been underway since September and will continue in earnest to ensure a smooth transition as the trusts come together.
